long time no see

It's been awhile, a really long while. I never intended for this hiatus to last this long, but things happen. I also think that I needed to know that I could live my life without this...that my life did not begin and end with social media. This little corner of the internet is mine though, and I like it. I may be back to regular postings or keep on going with this vacation till the new year, really not sure yet. Either way, I'm looking forward to coming back and sharing things with all of you. I really do hope you stick around!

Till next time!

photo d1f777f1-2182-473f-9925-771cf096a625_zps5e8a7d27.jpg Hello Goodheart readers! My name is Elizabeth, and I lead the product design for Mercer + James, a men’s grooming and accessories brand that I started with my hubby a couple years back. When the opportunity to do a guest post on Danica’s blog arose, it took me some time to figure out a good topic to cover. Since Danica focuses mostly on female readers, I thought I’d keep the men’s shaving tips to myself and write a little about starting and growing a small design business. It’s a topic that a lot of people ask me about, as starting a small design business seems to be a dream that’s widely shared. From close friends to new acquaintances, people always want to tell me about their idea, and lament the difficulty of finding time and getting it off the ground. In my experience, starting is the biggest hurdle! So to dive right in, the following are the biggest tips I’ve learned about starting my own small design business. I hope they help you dive in with your own dream venture!

1. Choose something that reflects your passion and experience
Mercer + James sprung out of my hubby’s search for a great men’s shaving set. After having several junky models from big-box stores, he was ready to upgrade to something old-school and made to last. We visited some of the “high-end” brands, and after having a heart attack at their prices(something has to pay for all those ads and fancy storefronts) we set out to design something of our own. Our first creation was the Van Alen Deco shaving set, which was the result of lots of trial, error, and rounds of development to create something for ourselves. The reason for giving our origin story is that men’s shaving is something that affected us personally, and that we knew a lot about. This ensured our designs and business choices all came from a place of experience and knowledge. If you want to dive into a small business, you’ll do much better if you’re developing something that affects you personally. I’ve had friends start businesses before where their driving force was that the market seemed profitable. Making a reasonable profit is important in any business, but if it’s the driving force it will inevitably show up in the quality and experience for your customers. Businesses like that never last for long.

2. Just start! But start small.
You don’t have to have every detail worked out for your business... if you start small. If you want to sell a product, it’s easier than ever to start a fantastic shop online. Set aside a weekend, build a shop, and dive right in! You’ll learn quickly what works for you and what doesn’t, and with an online shop it’s very simple to course-correct. We absolutely love doing business online, through our website www.mercerandjames.com; it lets us try new things constantly, and lets us reach people all over the country, which we could never do if we had only physical locations. The same can be said about starting small with your merchandise our classic shaving oil and post-shave tonic are still made in small batches, allowing us to control quality very tightly and also never have to manage huge inventories. Some people open up a physical location and throw money into huge starter inventories that put too much pressure on their success or failure. Let this be a future goal, for after you’ve ironed out all the kinks!

3. Always shoot for the moon
Being better is what drives every decision we make as we design new products. There will always, always be someone cheaper or faster; successful small businesses in today’s market can’t compete on price. What we can bring to the table, however, is amazing quality and refined style that just doesn’t come off a mass assembly line. We’ve chosen to create a collection that mixes custom-designed sets and classic hats, as well as carefully curated items like our straight razors from Thiers-Issard, which are the best quality in the world. If you want to start your own business, make sure that what you offer is something better, not more of the same.

I could certainly wax poetic for the length of a book on all the tips, tricks, and craziness that I’ve learned over the past few years with Mercer + James, but these three really are the big ones. I hope they’ll help you dive in properly to your own dream venture!

Are you ready to start your own business yet?? Thanks to Mercer + James for such a great post and for sponsoring! Don't forget to check out their site! Their items would certainly make great gifts for the men in your life.

It's been a crazy month. First things first, I got a job! It's part-time and is a lot closer to what I would like to do. Yay! Besides that, August has been tough. Both cars broke down and the A/C has now broken down twice. As of right now, I am sitting under my fan trying to stay cool. Not sure if I mentioned it last year, but when I moved back home to Texas last August we had a bunch of stuff break down (water heater, washer/dryer, car, A/C...). August, apparently, isn't our month.

I've had thoughts of changing up this blog. I'd love to know what you guys do like, so I can make sure that certain things stick around. Let me know in the comments!

Here's to hoping my A/C gets fixed tomorrow! Till then I'll just be sitting under my fan dreaming of winter.
Stay cool, everyone!

disney trip: magic kingdom

magic kingdom #disney // goodheart blog The second part of my Disney adventure! We spent a day and a half at Magic Kingdom. I didn't take too many pictures, it was just so hot and packed to take out my camera very often, of course I did get some shots of Cinderella's castle. I felt I enjoyed this park much more as a kid. However, for the rides we could have planned it better. If you have the magic bands and sign up for fastpass+, realize that there is a certain time (a one hour window) where you can go on the ride. We didn't realize that at first, and passed up on a ride because we needed to wait 3 hours. Oops!

I was really excited to see the new parts of the park, namely in Fantasyland. They definitely did such a nice job, but I was kind of sad that the part that was from Tangled was just for bathrooms. Sad day my friends, since that movie is one of my favorites. The Be Our Guest restaurant and The Seven Dwarfs ride were extremely popular, definitely try to reserve and get your fastpass+ ahead of time.

Overall, it was nice to go back. Got to see all the new things and remember my trip from before. I would love to go back, but not during the last weekend in June.

Have you been to Magic Kingdom? What's your favorite part?

disney trip: animal kingdom

tree of life #disney // goodheart blog As promised, my Disney trip! The day we arrived we spent the afternoon at Animal Kingdom. The last time I went to Disney World (18 years ago! Whoa!), this park didn't even exist yet. I really enjoyed it, it's like going to the zoo but on steroids. While we didn't spend all day here, I definitely could have. We spent the majority of our time in the Africa section and went on a mini safari! Really fun and interesting.

So that hippo up there had the right idea, cause it was HOT! If you can just avoid Florida in the summer months, do it. On this mini safari, the animals were up close and personal. Like that one zebra, literally so close you could touch it! If you make it to Animal Kingdom, go on the safari. It's cool.

Overall, my Animal Kingdom experience was great! I'll have to spend a full day there next time.

Have you been to Animal Kingdom?

Next up, Magic Kingdom. I'll have three other posts on my trip (sooo many photos), one for each park I went to. Stay tuned.

photo fcf927b9-fd76-4fe7-a8a3-08121ede52be_zps55ba7835.jpg Happy 4th of July! I am back and have recuperated from my trip to Disney World, which I will tell you all about next week. So for now, I'll share with you some cool stuff and let you enjoy this weekend.

- Berry Lemonade Popsicles! Yum! If you don't feel like making some, you can always get some Bomb Pops. Patriotic and tasty.

- This DIY Push Pop Confetti is the coolest. Great for any holiday!

- Supposedly, there's nothing more American than pie. Learning how to make a pie has been on my to-do list for a long time now and this strawberry one sounds delicious.

- If you're looking for a cocktail, these Bomb Pop shots are almost too pretty to drink.

Hope all of you have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend!

It's been two weeks since I was in Oregon, and I definitely miss it. I miss it almost always though. I went for a visit because I had a job interview, the first one in awhile, and I (unfortunately or fortunately) didn't get it after all. Even though nothing came of my main reason for shelling out the big bucks to get there, it was still a great visit. A visit filled with friends, family, and flowers.
