guest post: Megan from Feathers & Freckles

Hi! I'm Megan from Feathers & Freckles and I'm cheap frugal. Few things in my closet cost more than $100, and anything that did was probably a gift. I love to thrift; I am usually wearing at least one thrifted item in any given outfit. The thrill of the hunt is unlike anything else, and when you do spot that one item you've been searching for, it's like finding a soulmate. You never know what you're going to find when you walk into a thrift store, and I always feel like I'm on a treasure hunt. Sure, you have to sift through a lot of pit stains, used undergarments, and fanny packs - but that makes finding something good that much more fun! These are some of my favorite thrifted finds over the past few months.
All three of these skirts are thrifted. I like thrifting skirts because they are easy to belt if they don't fit just right.
I love mixing old and new items together. It gives an outfit a vintage-vibe that I love, and I like that a lot of my clothes have a past that I don't know about. Then again, I probably don't want to know about it either...
I hope you enjoyed this guest post from Megan! She's awesome and has curly hair, like me. We're almost like twins. haha. Go check out her blog! Seriously, you should.

is everyone hanging out without me?

Have any of you read this book??
If you haven't, you should! It's definitely funny and entertaining.

Chapter: Married People Need to Step It Up
"As an adult, I've met an ocean of divorced people. I might even know more divorced people than married people, because I live in godless Los Angeles, where if you're engaged it simply means you're publicly announcing that you are dating a person monogamishly."

Today was my first day of my new schedule. I think I died a little inside from waking up so early on a Sunday. I now work from Friday-Tuesday (Wednesdays and Thursdays off). The only amazing thing about this change is that I now will be able to wake up at 5am instead of 4am, and on Fridays I don't have to be at work till 10 am! Who knew I could be so excited about that fact.

Hope all of you had a great weekend!

Things that I'm thankful for:
-My family and friends
-Meeting great new people here in Oregon
-Having a job and working for a great company
-A relatively smooth move to a new state
-Knowing my parents will be visiting me in a few weeks
-Schedule changes at work (which means I won't need to wake up at 4 am anymore!)

What is something you are thankful for?
Hope all of you had a fantastic Thanksgiving!

these boots are made for walking

So these are my new boots. They are pretty hardcore (has a temperature rating of -25º F), at least to me, since I haven't needed boots like these ever. What do you guys think??

I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday, but does anyone else think it's crazy that Thanksgiving is 2 weeks away? Time just seems to keep speeding up.
(*actually one week, I've completely lost track of time. haha.)

Hope all of you are having a great week!

guest post: decorating small spaces

Today Kristina from Something 2 Write About is taking over my blog for the day! She's super sweet and awesome, so you should definitely check out her blog too.
Hello everyone! I'm Kristina from Something 2 Write About, and today I'm honored to be guest posting for my friend Danica here at Goodheart!

Since I know many of you can relate (myself having lived in a 600 square foot studio with my husband last year); I've compiled some pointers on how to best decorate small spaces. You'd be surprised how color, material and arrangements can affect the way you feel about your little home!

Tip #1 - Keep it light and airy

Small spaces have the ability to enchant just as much as grand homes do, so don't be fooled by size. What you do need to pay attention to, however, is color. Every little piece in your home is a part of your overall composition, and every piece is important to helping it live up to its spacious ability. Lighter paint and/or furniture tones, like whites, off-whites, beach wood beige, and light greys; are wonderful choices (especially when talking paint for a rental). Choosing white-on-white tones, for instance, has the same visual effect as wearing nude pumps with a dress (for those fashionistas out there) - it elongates and lengthens a space to it's full appeal.

Tip #2 - Clear the clutter
When my husband and I moved last June, we decided to get rid of a lot of stuff. It was important for us to rid ourselves of unused/uneeded items and create better storage options in the new place. Besides getting rid of a few things, I make it a goal to live clutter free daily. This means putting things back after you use them, clean as you cook, and general tidying; which results in less "deep cleans" in the future and more readiness for company. I suppose I'm a bit of an old-fashioned housewife when it comes to my thinking, but the more you care for your home, the better you feel - And a clutter-free area always makes a room look larger!

Tip #3 - Play with pattern, materials and arrangements
Even though I write about home decor everyday, I still struggle with making my own tiny place feel like a dream. How should I put these items together? Where can I use this in the house? What do I need to make this room feel more put together? Your best bet for inspiration comes from practice, the insight of others and (wait for it) Pinterest photos! the more you experiment with what you have, the more you will understand what you may need to produce a space you are proud of. Vertical stripes (on curtains, let's say) help a room feel taller, metal or glass elements such as vases or bowls reflect light to make rooms feel more open, and simple arrangements (try 3 to 5 items, or 2 items of different sizes) can be used to create balance and harmony in an otherwise unorganized area.

Tip #4 - Streamline your furniture
...And we wonder why Ikea so is popular with dorm-life and "first places" :) Thin furniture can be packed more easily in tiny spots, and with less air choked up by chunky legs or bulbous frames, the more space you can actually see. This doesn't mean that antique dressers are out of the question - mixing and matching is surely appealing, but just watch the visual heaviness in the room.
Hope these tips helped you out friends! If you ever need any advice or thoughts on your own decorating dilemma, just hop on over to Something 2 Write About and drop me a line. I always love to meet my readers. Cheers! xo

if you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain

I kind of got this song stuck in my head when I was waiting for the bus, literally caught in the rain.
jacket: Columbia Sportswear; sweater: BCBG via Dillard's; pants: Gap; boots: DSW necklace: Nordstrom

This is pretty much a terrible picture. It gets so dark at 4:30! It's crazy.
I loved my outfit today though, it was super comfy and cozy but still looked pretty nice.
I also love my new jacket (which has a fancy silver lining) and my new pants!

Sorry I've been MIA lately, it definitely hasn't been intentional. Last week was a rough one to say the least, today wasn't all that great either. However, it was a little bit easier to laugh it off today. I'm very thankful that my coworkers are so nice and we all really seem to get along, makes things so much better.

Hope all of you have a great week!

dear life

Today has been a bad day.  I had planned to take outfit shots and had another post in mind, but it seems that life wanted to throw me a completely annoying curve ball. So I've spent my afternoon watching episodes of How I Met Your Mother that I missed and ordered in pizza. I think I feel a little bit better. I hope tomorrow is much better than today.

Okay so I'm really wanting a flannel shirt. I've never actually owned one. I think I mentioned that to someone a week or two ago and they were kind of astounded, but you guys, I'm from Texas. I have never ever needed it. We were lucky if we could wear a sweater outside and not die of a heat stroke.
I'm thinking that since I almost freeze every time I go to work, that I should possibly buy one.

I'm liking this one the most, at the moment. Looks like I should make a stop at AE today if I have a chance.

I definitely said at some point that I was going to catch up on my sleep this weekend, that apparently was no joke. I think I slept for about 12 hours last night. I didn't even eat dinner, sleep was just that much more important. haha.

Hope all of you have a fantastic weekend!

staying alive

I actually feel pretty awake today. First time ever with my new schedule.
hat: mark.; scarf: bought in Florence, Italy; sweater: F21; tunic: BCBG; belt: Gap; leggings: H&M; boots: Guess via DSW

I actually wore my fleece jacket, coat, and gloves on the way to work. Yes, that does sound a little intense, but I wait for a bus for about 20 and walk a little less than a mile to work as well at 5 am (it takes me about an hour to get to work). Those extra layers finally helped me not feel so numb by that time I get to the building.

Who's excited for the weekend?? I know I am!

ikea shopping

I've found a few pieces of furniture that I want and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.
Ikea shopping is always great.

These are the things I'm looking at buying at the moment. I definitely need to buy more furniture, but these are what I'm considering getting soon. I really love the bed. Maybe I'll get to go this weekend and have that chocolate cake again too. Has anyone else tried the chocolate cake from there?? It's pretty delicious.

I'm still adjusting to the whole waking up at 4 am thing, so I haven't had a chance to take outfit shots. Pretty much as soon as I get out of work, I'm just plain exhausted. I'm hoping I'll get used to waking up at the crack of dawn soon. haha.
